10 Ways Not to Make Big Bucks - Revisited After 10 Years

10 Ways Not to Make Big Bucks - Revisited After 10 Years

Ten years ago, I wrote an article entitled 10 Ways Not to Make Big Bucks. I had been frustrated then by the success of so many at the same time as I seemed to have been standing still. The markets were booming, salaries were stratospheric, and I was making bad investment and job choices. What blows me away today is that I learned nothing over the last decade, and that I am still in absolutely the same place.

It was a wonderful list, and as fitting today as it was in 2007! I wouldn’t change a thing, save to add an eleventh: Get so enraged by Trump’s win that you assume that the threat of nuclear disaster and political chaos would tame the markets and opportunities.

Here are the original 10:

1. Get an advance degree, especially a Ph.D.

2. Go to an ivy league college.

3. Marry someone without money and connections.

4. Follow your passion.

5. Work for a non-profit, except as the CEO

6 Play by the rules.

7. Care about people you work with.

8. Include as friends only those you really like.

9. Live in someplace you can afford.

10. Have some principles.
